There are a few things that I’m known for.
- I always make too much food.
- I’m always forcing whoever is over to bring leftovers home with them because, well, see number one.
- There are certain things in my home that I am obsessively organized about. Mainly pens, and my kitchen.
Don’t believe me about number three? Here’s a little look at my spice drawer.
And a closer view, in case you didn’t realize that all those spice bottles were actually in alphabetical order. And yes, those two hand written ones are giving me a twitch. We’ve all got our quirks.
So, when I say I like my kitchen to be organized, I really mean it. I’ve been using Rubbermaid’s easy find lid system for years now. Before Bo and I moved into the house, we were in a little condo, with a littler kitchen, that I filled up with way too many small appliances to have much room left for storage. These containers were a lifesaver for me. Now, sure, we’re in a bigger house, with a good size kitchen, and more storage, but still, who wants to devote an entire cupboard to storage containers. Worse – who wants to keep them somewhere else in the house so you have to go on a hunt every time you need them.
Here’s where I keep mine: off to one side of one shelf in our, cough, candy pantry*.
There are dozens of containers there, all different sizes, and they are a life saver through the year. I love those giant ones that are holding the rest when it’s time for birthday parties – I can make huge fruit and pasta salads the night before and store in there (right now one is actually filled with the whipped shortbread cookies from yesterdays post). The most used are probably the 3, 5, and 7 cup sizes though. It’s to the point where my Mom and Nana will bring those sizes over when they come for dinner, to “trade” me for ones filled with leftovers, lol! There’s some smaller ones too, that get used here and there, mainly for snacks for the kids and sauces for dipping. Also great because I just snap the lid back on and put them in the fridge.
I love these because most of the sizes fit into each other, and all the lids fit together, and snap to the bottom of their corresponding containers. It’s nearly impossible to lose these things. I’ve been running them through the dishwasher constantly for years too, and they’re holding up incredibly well!
How about I illustrate this a bit better. Here’s a brand new 24 piece set:
Here are all the pieces out of the box and put together:
And here is how small everything is when stacked together:
Best. Storage. Ever.
*Not everything in this cupboard is candy….but there is definitely more than there should be, and it was the easiest way to differentiate it from the “healthy” pantry on the other side of the room. Also, it’s awesome when people are over and the kids ask if they can have a healthy or unhealthy cupboard snack, lol!
