I saw something the other day that really stuck with me: “My goal for 2016 is to accomplish the goals of 2015, which I should have done in 2014, because I made a promise in 2013, and planned in 2012”.
Start the New Year off slowly, one thing at a time, and in no time you’ll have a house running better than it ever has. The day after New Year’s, change your furnace filter (look at how easy that was!). Next up, clean your oven (hello self-clean!), and while that’s running, just give your stove a wipe down. A few days later, give your fridge a once over. Get rid of all that stuff you’re sure you’ll need, but haven’t used in three months. Do the same thing with your pantry (and check all the expiry dates). Then, clean your dishwasher.
Wait, you didn’t know you were supposed to clean your dishwasher? Seriously? I’m just kidding, I didn’t either.
You really do need to clean your dishwasher though! I know, your first instinct is to think that sounds insane. After all, soap goes in every wash, and the dishes are clean, so the dishwasher must be too. It’s not though. Limescale and grease are constantly building up in the filters, pipes, and spray arms. Areas that you couldn’t get to even if you wanted to, and that build-up will shorten the life of your dishwasher. Finding out about Finish® Dishwasher Cleaner was a game changer for me, and I’m obsessed now with throwing it in once a month, and always having a sparkling, fresh smelling dishwasher. It’s like a happy place that doesn’t take any work.
Seriously, all you do is peel off the sticker on the lid (there’s a little wax plug that it hides which dissolves in the heat), then stick it in and run a cycle. Finish® Dishwasher Cleaner formula has 5x Power Actions that help maintain your machine, remove limescale, clear grease, clean hidden parts and freshen your dishwasher (you can get fresh scent, my personal favorite, or lemon).
Need some more proof, here are the before and after pictures from my dishwasher yesterday, during my pre-holiday clean. I know, the before looks pretty good right? It’s right after I’d emptied the dishes from the last load, there’s just some water marks left.
But then you see the after. It’s nothing but clean, sparkling freshness. And the smell, seriously, the smell is SO great! You can read about that gross musty smell I thought was normal in my last post. I haven’t had to suffer through smelling that in months now, and I do not miss it!
You want to know how I’m about to make that post-holiday cleanup even easier for you though? I’m going to give you the chance to have someone else do it for you, and then keep doing it all year long!
Finish® is giving you the chance to win free Home Cleaning Services for a Year! A prize value of $8K!!!!! I just think if you could use some H2 heading in the post that we could read better. Anyway this cleaning formula is worthy a try.

Lovely and informative post! I just finished cleaning the house after my last holiday guests, but my kitchen appliances needs a more thorough cleaning. Your suggestions seems like a good idea and I could change a little my cleaning routine in the name of one perfectly cleaned kitchen. As a professional cleaner I’ve established some rules and my family follows them strictly, but a small change would be a breath of fresh air for all of us. Thanks for sharing and have a great year! Loft Boarding
This is a great post on how to get your house back in order after the holidays! I especially appreciate your tip to start early and tackle one area at a time. It can be so overwhelming to try to clean everything at once. I’m also interested in learning more about loft boarding as a way to maximize storage space in a home. Do you have any tips on how to decide if loft boarding is right for someone’s home. Thanks for the helpful tips!
